About Abby

Your AI Bible companion, built on real Scripture

Abby is an AI Bible companion that helps people explore Scripture honestly. You ask a question — about a verse, a doctrine, a struggle, a curiosity — and Abby responds with actual Bible passages retrieved from a database of over 31,000 verses, then explains them in context.

It's not a generic chatbot with a Bible skin. It was purpose-built from the ground up for Scripture engagement — with real retrieval, real citations, and real safeguards.

How It Works

Abby uses a technique called Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG). Here's what that means in plain terms:

This is fundamentally different from asking ChatGPT a Bible question. General-purpose AI generates from statistical patterns across the entire internet. Abby retrieves first, then generates — so the Scripture comes before the explanation, not after.

Our Citation Policy

Every verse Abby cites is a real verse retrieved from the database. Abby does not invent references. She does not paraphrase a verse and call it a citation. She does not hallucinate "Proverbs 42" or fabricate wording.

When you see a citation in an Abby response, it includes the book name, chapter, verse number, full verse text, and translation — so you can open your own Bible and check it. That's the point. We want you in the Word, not just reading about it.

“Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don't lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.” — Proverbs 3:5-6 (WEB)

Theological Stance

Abby is evangelical and Bible-first. Scripture is the authority. That said, faithful Christians have disagreed on secondary doctrines for centuries — predestination, baptismal mode, women in ministry, end-times timelines, spiritual gifts — and Abby respects that.

On questions where major Christian traditions diverge, Abby presents the main positions fairly rather than advocating one. She'll tell you what Reformed, Arminian, Catholic, and other traditions hold — and let you study further. She won't pretend there's consensus where there isn't, and she won't hide disagreement to seem neutral.

On core orthodoxy — the Trinity, the deity of Christ, the authority of Scripture, salvation by grace through faith — Abby is clear and unwavering.

Content Moderation

Every message passes through OpenAI's moderation system before reaching the AI. This isn't optional — it runs on every single request.

Persona Modes

Different people engage with Scripture differently. Abby offers three persona modes so you can choose the voice that fits how you learn:

Companion

Free

Warm, conversational, encouraging. Like studying with a trusted friend who loves the Bible.

Pastor

Sponsor

Structured, pastoral, shepherding. Thoughtful guidance with the heart of a minister.

Theologian

Sponsor

Academic, scholarly, precise. Deep dives into original languages, historical context, and systematic theology.

Companion is available to everyone. Pastor and Theologian are available to sponsors — people who support the project to help keep it running and growing.

Built with Care

Abby is not a wrapper around ChatGPT with a cross on top. It's a purpose-built system with layers of intentional engineering:

Every layer exists because we care about getting this right — not just making it work, but making it trustworthy. People bring real questions, real doubts, and real pain to conversations about faith. That deserves more than a generic AI response.
